Mahindra & Mohammed to Mahindra & Mahindra

Mahindra & Mahindra

On 2nd October 1945, the company was established as Mahindra & Mohammed. The Mahindra siblings J.C Mahindra and K.C Mahindra along with Gulam Muhammad co-founded this company. However, they renamed the company to Mahindra & Mahindra Limited (M&M) later in 1948, when Ghulam Mohammed left for Pakistan to join the Ministry of finance.

Milestones’s in Mahindra’s journey

  • 1947 – The company brings in the iconic Willy’s Jeep to traverse the rugged terrain of a newly independent India.
  • 1956 – Mahindra & Mahindra goes public and listed on the Bombay stock exchange.
  • 1961 – Mahindra pioneers farm mechanism with the launch of its first tractor to support India’s green revolution.
  • 1983 – Mahindra & Mahindra Becomes the largest selling tractor brand in India, a position it continous to hold for the next three decades.
  • 1986 – Mahindra & Mahindra enters the IT space through a joint venture with British telecom.
  • 1991 – Mahindra & Mahindra started a non-banking rural financing company Maxi Motors Financial Services Limited, to bridge the gap between rural and urban of a liberalised India. Later, the company became Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services Limited.
  • 1994 – Mahindra & Mahindra forays into real estate business, now knoen as Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd.
  • 1996 – Established Mahindra Holidays & Resortd India Ltd., pioneers timeshare holidya, offering fun-filled and affordable vacations to aspiring middle class Indian families.

The Mahindra & Mahindra group donated rupees 150 crores to the ‘Prime Minister Citizen assistance and relief in emergency situations fund’ towards the end of the financial year 2020.

20,402 Mahindra group employees contribute rupees 9.22 crores to the Covid-19 relief fund. of this 7.98 crore rupees from the fund has been distributed to benefit 1,99,079 individuals.

Reduction of Waste Generated

20 locations have received Zero Waste to Landfill ( ZWL ) certification within the Mahindra group. In F21, 5 of these locations were certified ZWL.

Automotive Division: 60% reduction in wood usage achieved since F16, and 76% reduction in paper usage since F16.

13 plant locations in Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd have received ZWL certifications as of the end of F21.

7 Mahindra plants are sending hazardous waste like paint sludge, cotton waste, and ETP sludge at cement plants for co-processing as a part of the Zero Waste to Landfill initiative.

In F21, the Mahindra group planted 1.14 million trees across India.
